About this course
This certificate works through mental health condition by condition, so you finish it with a real understanding of what each one involves rather than a general awareness. That makes it useful in almost any role that involves working with people.
It is a knowledge qualification with no placement requirement. It is endorsed by CIMSPA, the professional body for sport and physical activity.
Who this is for
Open to learners aged 16 and over. There are no formal entry requirements, though NCFE notes that a level 1 health and social care related qualification is helpful preparation.
What you will study
Thirteen mandatory units, all of which must be achieved.
Understanding mental health
The overarching unit: what mental health is, how conditions are classified, and the effects of stigma. 40 hours.
Understanding stress
Causes, signs and management. 10 hours.
Understanding anxiety
Anxiety disorders and their effects. 10 hours.
Understanding phobias
Types of phobia and approaches to treatment. 10 hours.
Understanding depression
Signs, causes and treatment. 10 hours.
Understanding post-natal depression
Recognition, effects and support. 10 hours.
Understanding bipolar disorder
Presentation, effects and management. 10 hours.
Understanding schizophrenia
Symptoms, causes and treatment. 10 hours.
Understanding dementia
Types of dementia and their progression. 10 hours.
Understanding eating disorders
Recognition, effects and support. 10 hours.
Understanding ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder across the lifespan. 10 hours.
Understanding OCD
Obsessive compulsive disorder and its treatment. 10 hours.
Understanding PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder, causes and support. 10 hours.

How you are assessed
Internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence and quality assured by NCFE. No placement is required.
