About this course

Cyber security is now everyone's problem, not just the IT department's. This certificate gives you a proper grounding in the threats organisations face, the language used to describe them, the legal and ethical framework, and the methods used to keep systems secure.

It is a knowledge qualification, so there is no technical prerequisite. It also covers the job roles and key organisations in the sector, which makes it a sensible first step if you are thinking about cyber security as a career.

Who this is for

Open to learners aged 16 and over. There are no formal entry requirements, though NCFE notes that learners may find a level 1 or level 2 digital skills or IT qualification helpful preparation.

What you will study

Six mandatory units.

Introduction to cyber security

What cyber security covers, why it matters, and the roles and organisations involved. 20 guided learning hours.

Understand terminology used in cyber security

The language of the sector, so you can read and take part. 15 guided learning hours.

Understand legal and ethical aspects of cyber security

Data protection, computer misuse and the ethical questions. 20 guided learning hours.

Understand common threats to cyber security

Malware, phishing, social engineering and the rest. 15 guided learning hours.

Understand methods of maintaining cyber security

Controls, procedures and good practice. 20 guided learning hours.

Working with others in cyber security

Communicating risk and working as part of a response. 20 guided learning hours.

Internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence and externally quality assured by NCFE. Graded as achieved or not yet achieved.
