Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings
A first qualification for anyone thinking about working in health, social care or with children and young people.
About this course
This is the starting point if you are considering care work but have not worked in the sector before. It introduces the range of services and roles, the values the sector runs on, and the essentials of safeguarding, communication, equality and health and safety.
It is a knowledge qualification, so you do not need to be working or on placement. It does not confer competence or a licence to practise; what it does is give you a solid, recognised foundation and a clear route into level 2.
Who this is for
Open to learners aged 14 and over. There are no entry qualifications and no placement requirement.
What you will study
Twenty credits from seven mandatory units, plus at least five credits from a choice of optional units covering areas such as disability awareness, mental health, dementia, autism, child development and healthy living.
Understand the range of service provision and roles
Who does what across health, social care, early years and childcare. 26 hours.
Understand the principles and values in health and social care
Dignity, choice, respect and the values that underpin good practice. 26 hours.
Awareness of protection and safeguarding
Recognising harm and knowing what to do. 24 hours.
Introduction to communication
Communicating well with people who use services and with colleagues. 19 hours.
Introductory awareness of equality and inclusion
Treating people fairly and including everyone. 25 hours.
Introductory awareness of health and safety
Keeping yourself and others safe. 36 hours.
Introductory awareness of person-centred support
Putting the person, not the task, at the centre. 18 hours.

NCFE is clear that this qualification does not confirm competence in a job role. It is a foundation and a route into the level 2 qualifications that do.
