Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning
The foundation qualification for anyone supporting learning in a school or college, covering safeguarding, behaviour, development and the practical side of classroom support.
About this course
This is the qualification most schools look for when recruiting classroom support staff. It covers how schools and colleges work, how children and young people develop, and the safeguarding and behaviour knowledge you need from day one.
It is a practical qualification. You need to be working or on placement in a school or college throughout, because the assessment is built around what you do in the setting.
Who this is for
You must be at least 16 and working or on a practical placement in a school or college for the duration of the course. We do not set other entry requirements. If you do not have a placement, talk to us and we will help you find one.
What you will study
Eleven mandatory units, all of which must be achieved.
Understand schools and colleges as organisations
How education settings are structured, governed and held to account.
Understand children and young people's development
Expected patterns of development and the things that affect them.
Safeguarding children and young people
Your responsibilities, how to recognise concerns, and what to do about them.
Equality, diversity and inclusion in a learning environment
Making sure every learner can take part and achieve.
Maintain relationships with children and young people
Building professional, appropriate and effective working relationships.
Support the health and safety of children and young people
Keeping learners safe in and out of the classroom.
Support positive behaviour in a learning environment
Behaviour policies, strategies and your role in applying them.
Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment
Working effectively with teachers and other support staff.
Understand children and young people's play and leisure
The role of play and leisure in development and learning.
Promote an effective learning environment
Preparing and maintaining spaces and resources that support learning.
Provide displays in a learning environment
Planning, producing and maintaining classroom displays.

How you are assessed
Internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence built up in your setting, and quality assured by NCFE. Typically completed in a year.
Support while you study
Every learner gets an individual learning plan, an initial assessment of English and maths, and a named tutor. You will have a college email address and access to Microsoft Teams. See our learning support and career support pages for what else is available.
