Functional Skills qualifications in mathematics

About this course

Functional Skills maths is built around solving problems, not memorising methods. Three quarters of the marks come from working through practical situations of the kind you meet at work and in everyday life.

Level 2 Functional Skills mathematics sits at the same qualification level as GCSE grades 9 to 4, and is widely accepted by employers and by universities and colleges as evidence of maths at that level.

Who this is for

This is for anyone aged 19 or over who does not already hold maths at the level they need. No prior qualification is required. We assess where you are at the start so you join at the right level.

What you are assessed on

Maths is assessed as a single component covering three content areas. A quarter of the marks are non-calculator and three quarters allow a calculator.

How you are assessed

Assessment is pass or fail rather than graded. Entry level assessments take between one hour fifteen and one hour forty five minutes. Level 1 and level 2 assessments take between one hour forty five and two and a half hours. Level 1 and level 2 papers are marked by City and Guilds; entry level papers are marked here and checked by City and Guilds.
